Breonna Taylor, the former assistant manager of a food processing company in Florida, recently received a call from a recruiter for a job that she has been seeking for almost a year.
She immediately jumped at the opportunity.
“I’m a food scientist, and my job is to figure out how to fix the food that goes into food products, and that’s the only job I have left,” Taylor told Business Insider.
She got the job after spending months researching, interviewing and ultimately landing the job at her former employer, which she now leads.
Here’s what you need to know about the job.
What’s the typical job?
The typical job for food science and nutritionists involves being a researcher in the field.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs in food science grew from 14,000 in 2015 to more than 33,000 jobs in 2020.
According the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the median salary for a food science position in 2018 was $85,000, up from $83,000 a decade earlier.
That’s up from the $67,000 median salary in 1980, according to the Bureau.
The average worker has a bachelor’s degree, and about one-third of those workers are women.
The jobs are typically part-time, with about 60 percent of workers receiving at least one paycheck a week, according the BLS.
A lot of these jobs require a lot of hands-on work.
For example, the food lab technician may have to fix foods at home.
If that doesn’t fit your profile, you could apply to be a food microbiologist or microbiologist assistant.
The most common job at a food lab involves testing products that are shipped from one place to another, which is known as a sample transfer.
If you’re interested in that kind of work, you’ll want to work in a food storage facility.
And if you’re a food security expert, you might want to look into a food safety training program.
Where to get an interview?
There are several job boards out there for food scientists, but you may want to start by contacting the employers of the companies you want to apply to.
This is where you’ll be matched with the person who will actually help you find your next job.
Here are a few of the top job boards to start with: CareerBuilder, the CareerBuilder Job Board, and LinkedIn, the Job Matching Network.
If these companies are on your radar, you may be able to get a better job search by using a job board or using the job search app.
There are also a couple of other job boards that are geared towards hiring food scientists.
For instance, I Know First, a company that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to predict the future, is known for having a strong job search algorithm.

If there’s a company you know that has a job posting, you can check out their job listings on Glassdoor.
The site is free and gives you the option to rate job openings on a scale of 1 to 10.
Glassdoor has a free version that has an easy to use interface.
Glassdance, a job search site that has been around since 2014, also has a way to rank job openings for food and beverage professionals.
There is also a free service that helps you find job openings in your local area.

How to apply for a full-time job In the meantime, here are some tips to help you navigate the job hunt.
First, make sure you have the right background.
“There’s a good chance that the position you’re looking for is not a full time job,” said Lauren Gossett, who has worked as a food sciences associate professor at Rice University.
She said that because the average job search at most companies is two to three weeks, most people don’t realize how hard it is to land a job at the top of the food science industry.
“So, I encourage you to research every position and take every opportunity you can,” she said.
Second, get a resume.
Make sure that you’re an experienced food scientist or you may not be able find a job if you have a weak resume.
If it’s a part- time position, you should probably get a more detailed one.
Third, consider your career.
“If you’re doing a job like a food chemistry or food microbiology or food security, then your résumé is probably going to have a few sections that are a little bit different from each other,” Gossetts said.
“But, it should also have a summary of your accomplishments and what you’ve done for the last 15 years.”
Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for more information.
