With the National Anthem played in a solemn and patriotic voice and the national anthem played in its traditional high, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has announced a new, patriotic nativity play, as the NFL opens its annual National Day of Prayer on Sunday.
The new play is called The Night of Hope and Remembrance.
It is titled after the first verse of the Pledge of Allegiance, in which President Abraham Lincoln says “Our country will never be destroyed by hate.”
The play will be staged on the field at the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice facility and will be televised on ESPNU.
The Anthem, the second-most played song in the NFL, is one of many themes that the league and the league’s players’ union have worked to emphasize in recent years, including its commitment to diversity.
